Illustrations Published in Guangzhou Daily Newspapar in China in 2013

I am currently still doing weekly reports and illustrations on topics related to LA life for the Guangzhou Newspaper, which is the mainstream daily newspaper in one of the largest southern cities in China. The vibrant LA life inspires me to use my paintings to bring up social concerns in LA which the Chinese public under a different social system find it interesting and irradiative. I depict true representations about the urbanite love and their pursuit of happiness; my subjects cover street scenes to beach life in sunny California, shopping mall culture to festival celebrations. Through my life experience as an immigrant in Los Angeles, I stand on my perspective to deliver informative message through my art. Based on my daily observation in my life, I blend in narrative skills in illustrations, artistic exaggerations and realism art techniques to project the characters and objects in a story-telling way.

According to the positive feedback from Chinese readers, blending traditional realistic and cotemporary skills is a universal language and a powerful tool to reach out to all walks of life. I consider these illustrations not only my job, but also my daily training and practice in painting. I observe happenings evolving in my daily life and use them in my works. Through this continued practice, it enriches my creativity and imagination in themes and skills.

CAC's Plein Air
I depicted the scene that was one of my plein air experiences in the California Art Club in this piece. I introduced the Renaissance role play for the artists’ demonstration in this activity, and brought out the inviting landscape in the Autry Museum, further told the history background of CAC. In CAC, some of the greatest American-Chinese realism painters who were famous in China as well, they reached their success in art career in the US through the strong supporting by the CAC.
According to the Editor of Guangzhou Daily, a lot of young Chinese artists like mine this report. I think that must be through introducing fresh painting methods of the LA painters, my illustration inspires some Chinese painter to try something new in their paintings, also by telling the successful stories about the Masters, my report encourages younger generation of some Chinese painters to keep going on their career and to persist in pursuing their dreams in art.

Summer’s Gift
I represent the infinite pleasure of the seashore source is the most generous gift that summer season gives to the LA people. LA people enjoy various activities on the beach, including surfing, diving and fishing, etc. I emphasis California Department of Fish and Wildlife sets the regulation to establish a closed season for protecting the fishery, this closure during April and May is very effective to protect grunion during their peak spawning period at San Padro every year.
I got positive feedback when this report and illustration published on the Guangzhou Daily next year. The protecting regulation in this news attracted attention and consideration of the relevant department in Guangdong. As the coastal region in China, Guangdong is facing critical problem of decrease of the wildlife fishery resource caused by one of the serious reasons which is fishing indiscriminately. Therefore, LA current method may be the good reference for China to set up effective regulation.

Cerritos Farmer’s Market

I took my two young children to the Farmer’s Market in Cerritos on a beautiful Saturday morning. I enjoyed the lively and relaxing open market atmosphere there. The colors of fresh vegetables and fruits, live music dancing in the background and the smell of corn dogs floating in the air…all these bring life to the farmer’s market. My children especially enjoyed the performance of the Mexican folk music band.  My daughter gave some flowers to the performer to show her appreciation to their performance. I caught this sweet moment and painted it in my work. Through this warm interaction in my painting, audiences can feel harmony among people in the city we live.

Naples Island Christmas Lighting Ships Parade
I captured the Christmas Lighting Ship Parade event at Naples Island inLong Beach. I made a snapshot of the Naples Island’s residents decorating their boat for the parade. In this report, I emphasized that local citizens participated voluntarily and enthusiastically in this event out of their love to the city.

It is the community culture in Los Angeles that individuals contribute their own time and money to build the city together. The binding civic spirit here is uncommon in China under a different socio-political background.
On the contrary, the situation of the Chinese government is totally different that might cause waste of social resource and corruption. The community construction experience of LA may afford enlightenment and merit attention to the Chinese government.
